Adt-security, GE Security, Chubb and many other Home Security Providers offer integrated services. We feel committed to present also this option as an additional solution to one's security problems.

We believe that in certain cases our readers would prefer to set up their personal surveillance system, while in other cases the external solution offered by adt-security or other provider might be advisable. Therefore we will try to put forward the facts and to explain the differences while leaving the final choice to one's individual preferences.

The advantages of an integrated solution from adt-security or other provider are:

• Your security system will be set up by professionals,
• It will be set up and maintained to be always (24/7) in operating condition,
• Certain providers will not charge for hardware and/or installation,
• The system, as set up by adt-security or other provider will provide integrated alarms against burglary, fire, smoke, carbon monoxide, flooding, medical emergencies and possibly more hazards,
• Your system will be continuously monitored from a central station of adt-security or other provider, even if you are not aware that something bad is going on at your home while you are absent,
• You may obtain (and keep), probably at no cost, a risk assessment report based on a survey of your premises,
• If you sign up with such a service, adt-security or other, you will probably be awarded a document (a security system certification) capable of gaining you a substantial rebate on your insurance premium.

The disadvantages are:

• The contract will be signed with the homeowner, probably not with a tenant,
• The happening of an event will trigger a call from the adt-security or other service to public officers (police, fire fighters, ambulance etc.),
• There is no guarantee that the public forces will react promptly and dispatch immediately a rescue crew to survey the location,
• There is no guarantee as to the time when a rescue team will reach the place,
• There is an obligation of the customer for a minimum period of contract (possibly three years),
• There may be penalties if canceling the contract before its term,
• The adt-security or other service may be quite expensive in the form of a recurring monthly cost for the service.

Disclaimer:
Although both advantages and disadvantages listed above are believed to be applicable to most of the service providers, specific companies may propose different or additional services, even the visit of their own dispatched rescue team, supply firm guarantees and give incentives or bonuses suitable of changing somewhat the evaluation of the offer.

Therefore it is recommended to those willing to consider this option, to request a few offers from adt-security and also from different providers. That will also help in formulating precise questions, if a service is provided by one and not by another, and in obtaining the best offer.

It is suggested to ask adt-security or other provider for the names of a few customers of the same area, in order to check with them if they are reasonably satisfied with the service and what happened when an emergency arrived.

As advised before, although directed towards providing an answer to the same problem, either to set up a do-it-yourself surveillance system or to engage a security company like adt-security, the two alternatives are hardly comparable. Note that the offer above is a combination of the two. Therefore it is almost impossible to offer unbiased advice.

It is mostly a question of personal preference, of perceived danger, of risk evaluation, and on the expense one is ready to dedicate to one's own home security.

When is the external service preferable to a self designed and set up surveillance system? In those cases when the homeowner knows or presumes that the obstacles of technology are too high for him/her alone to surmount. Then the only other alternative would be doing nothing, which is never recommended. In any case the cost to pay for the service should be considered.

Anyway it is suggested to review periodically the generic advice of our page on Security Tips, to discuss the matter of home surveillance and security with reliable neighbors, and to take some positive action to protect one's home the best one can.

It is better to implement an imperfect security system rather than no system at all!
