This method carries telephony signals as digital audio, normally using speech data compression techniques to reduce data rate, arranged as data packet streams sent over Internet broadband network. Other expressions for the same subject are also Voice over Broadband, Broadband Phone, Broadband Telephony, IP Telephony and Internet Telephony. In common parlance VoIP is indifferently the actual voice transmission over the Internet or more precisely the protocol used to carry it out. Voice IP has become a commonplace solution for establishing voice communication over the Internet at no cost or at reduced rate especially since introduction of broadband high speed communication. Once a Personal Computer has a connection established to the Internet network, it is a simple matter to add a simple microphone and to download suitable software from one of a list of available service providers and to start talking. Except that the call will go through only (and this is a big question mark) if the recipient's computer is online at that time. This is similar to what happens when calling a cellular phone which may be shut off. Software based Voice IP services require the use of a computer connected to an Internet Service Provider. Other services allow to use a traditional telephone connected to an adapter (without PC) for transmitting voice conversations over the Internet. In any case functional Voice services require broadband Internet connection to be active. Integration of VoIP with other services that are available over the Internet include video conversation, audio conferencing, data file exchange, sharing address books, and finding out if additional partners (friends or colleagues) are present online. There may be differences about the charges (or the lack of them) for long range connections that different service providers may or may not debit to their customers. Some services are offered at no cost, but not all the facilities normally proposed by regular phone companies are available to Voice IP users. One has to acknowledge that the quality of voice transmission may be sometimes inferior to that of dedicated lines, depending also on speed of transmission and if satellite relays are part of the connection, due to propagation delay. However most of times quality is acceptable to normal users. It is reported that the capability of offering the service of Fax transmission over Internet using Voice Internet Protocol is still limited. Voice IP services are not yet linked to traditional services through a generally agreed upon system of identification numbers. Routing calls between the two systems is still difficult and unreliable because of lack of widely adopted similar standard for Voice over Internet networks. However some services provide connection from a Voice IP user to regular phone subscribers. VoIP providers may or may not offer directory assistance or subscribers' listings. Governments are increasingly regulating various aspects of Voice over Internet Protocol services to harmonize their requirements with those affecting traditional telephone services. Certain countries limit or forbid the availability of VoIP services in their territories because it is seen as a competitive challenge to traditional phone services, that often enjoy a monopolistic status. IP telephony services may also include videophone or video conferencing services as is customary in Japan. It is reported that Broadband Phone services over the Internet has enjoyed massive development in the last few years, enabling long distance calls for flat monthly fees. If an analog telephone adapter is connected to the broadband Internet network over a telephone jack, the service may result, for the user, almost equivalent to that of traditional phone companies, with the advantage of a fixed flat rate. This service, like a home phone, may be offered by broadband Internet providers as cable companies under such names as Internet Phone, Soft Phone or Digital Phone in preference to VoIP. Variations of service exist where one user ID is available also for portable computers connectable to different locations. At least until some of the problems still plaguing VoIP communications are solved, to make the integration with traditional phone services smoother, many users still prefer to have the internet connection as an additional service to control their expenses, but also not to give up a service that may be invaluable in emergencies. A website, http://www.testyourvoip.com offers to test the quality of an Internet connection by placing simulated VoIP calls to regular phone services. Check the following offers from Smarthome: Phones & Intercoms Security issues How is VoIP affecting Security subjects? It is important to notice that, at the present time and level of technological implementation it is not recommended to trust upon Broadband services for life saving emergency communications. Not all VoIP services provide connections with centers of emergency services.Emergency call numbers of Public telephone services are generally unreachable through the Internet except if special procedures are in place. Moreover VoIP reliability is put in cause because occasional power blackouts may hinder transmission as these services are not backed up as phone companies are. It is difficult to locate geographically network users that are using IP Telephony. Therefore Emergency Calls cannot be easily routed to a call center near the origin except if the caller is able to provide an address. The problem of privacy of voice transmission over VoIP is still open as encryption is adopted only by some service providers. Therefore it is believed that eavesdropping of Voice IP conversation is possible, using open source solutions.
