We addressed video surveillance of the entrance door in another page (see Entrance and Baby Camera). The devices described there have, in general, besides video, one way audio capability only. If two way conversation is a required feature for the intended use, then Video-intercom as described here may be more suitable. Why should one need such a nice gadget?
Video-intercom instruments come in different types, either hands free or handset units, but the person inside is never seen by the visitor through the system. The door release feature may be an optional add-on in certain devices. Black and white or color monitors are available, generally quite small, if the visitor's face is all one would want to see, but certain instruments give also NTSC video output for viewing on TV. Such devices are sometimes suitable for vision in the dark, through the use of internal infrared illuminators. (See Infrared Illuminators) Once the calling visitor rings the doorbell, the person inside can operate the Video-intercom, see the image taken by a camera on a small screen, and open the two way audio channel. In these door phone applications, audio is permitted contrary to the normal law interpretation that forbids operating audio on surveillance cameras. See Camera Audio. A more complex Video-intercom device amounting to a complete video surveillance system with additional two way audio communication capability, is fixed in space near the entrance door it is intended to control. It is operated by a passive infrared sensor (PIR) and records whatever moves in front of its camera. Therefore it can be used for any surveillance mission of the surroundings if suitable. Video shots and audio are recorded on internal memory or on removable cards. Recorded information can be transferred to DVR, computer or other media and screened later on demand as surveillance video recorded footage. Video-intercom can be either a modest starting point or a useful addition to more ambitious surveillance systems you may wish to consider for the security of your home and your loved ones.
