Video-installation
Video-installation is a most important part of the process of building a Home Surveillance System. We believe that with proper assistance, anybody with a minimum of technical attitude should be able to proceed to the installation, checking and commissioning of his/her own integrated Home Security project.
There is an even more important aspect of performing this installation exercise. It is the learning during the process. By setting up the system, much of the mystery of the workings becomes clear.
Not only that: if we assume that for your first Video-installation project you choose quite a simple system, by observing the operating procedures and possible shortcomings, you will be in a much better position for selecting your upgraded and expanded hardware and to talk to the installer you may wish to hire later for the next more complex project, with an intimate knowledge of the problems you met and overcame.
First you have to examine a few alternatives, where to place the camera, which specific power outlet to use, where to locate the monitor and the recorder. Then you should measure the distances and establish which length of cables and which types you would need. With this information you can buy the necessary cables and terminals.
In the design phase you have to select the essential elements, the camera (black and white or color) with its proper lens and sensor, you decide on the field of view and on the depth of focus, the video signal transmission procedure (wired or wireless), special illuminators if needed, eventual alarm devices, monitor, recorder etc.
You will find most of the technical information you need in the page on
Surveillance Camera Equipment and on the explanatory pages referenced therein.
You can make a list of the alternatives you would consider with the price, the features and benefits of each selection. You make a tentative selection and go on to clarify the connecting plugs needed and eventual transition connectors.
A sketch representing the connection diagram as provided by the supplier will help you in finding out which cable is connected to which item and how. You will see BNC connectors (fittings used to connect coaxial cable to camera or equipment) or RCA, and you should know which ones you need.
Then you have to see if you have to pierce holes into walls to pass the cables, and where and how to hold cables with clips. What is important, in our view, is to have in mind all that you need before starting, because it is quite frustrating to find out that the work has to be suspended because of some missing secondary item.
The supplier's instructions will generally provide all needed information, in the form of leaflets downloadable from the Internet and, in case of need, customer support may be called for.
Camera location is quite important. Possibly one should check, before fixing the camera mounting bracket, through a provisional connection, that the view as seen in the monitor is meaningful and corresponding to what one wants to see. Then if necessary, the location can be changed until acceptable.
For Home Surveillance the Video-installation should be quite simple so that you should not meet unexpected obstacles or surprises if you thoroughly plan your project beforehand.
We believe that having successfully accomplished the task, even with some phone help if needed, your confidence will be boosted and you will be ready to new and more complex Video-installation projects to enlarge and improve the scope of your Home Surveillance.
