Video-analytics:

High Hopes, Uncertain Results.

Home > Video Surveillance > Video Analytics

Video-analytics or Video Content Analysis is the complex of means and methods used to detect and single out, without human intervention, sets of occurrences meaningful to the specific purposes of the Video Surveillance installation considered.

While the applications range vastly, we are here mostly interested in those having practical meaning and use in the context of safety and security as applied to home or small business.

Video-analytics help organizations make better use of vast amounts of video and data for more informed decisions and quicker, more effective actions. Situational awareness results enhanced, and security management operations become automated, accurate, efficient.

Various capabilities are sought and operated in Video analytics, among them: eliminating redundancy of video feeds of still views to reduce storage requirements, motion detection, abandoned object detection, face recognition, plate number recognition, perimeter trespassing, equipment removal, video tracking and tamper detection, to name a few.

Each of these tasks requires dedicated software with specific functionality and hierarchical relationship if more than one are to be called up at any time.

No practical system is requested to provide all the above functions together. The success of proposed solutions is varying widely among suppliers, with false alarm rates so high sometimes to be practically useless.

However, notwithstanding the great successes enjoyed by Video-analytics in a few definite jobs, there is remarkable uneasiness in the field due to the following issues:

  • False Alarm reduction needs improvement
  • Ongoing maintenance of complex systems is becoming increasingly difficult
  • The cost for private individual or business is becoming excessive

Only known companies with testimonials of a long history of successful applications should be approached for exploring the suitability of proposed Video-analytics solutions.

Video analytics providers claim that their software is capable to perform scanning, retrieval and analysis of stored video based on user-defined queries.

Searching by Video-analytics large amounts of recorded video for possible events is becoming feasible, saving on cost and time consuming manual search but, due to the chance of false results, operators should always validate their real importance.

Innovations and new software developments are constantly being offered. However responsible actors in the branch warn from misconceptions attributing to Video-analytics performance success exceeding real achievements.

It is said loud and clear that "the reality is that Video-analytics are still very much in their infancy". It is even described as a technology "over-promised and under-delivered". See:
http://www.indigovision.com/learnabout-analytics.php

The main problem is therefore to consider only realistic expectations, limiting the use only to those applications that have a demonstrated history of success.

One of the questions with a simple task like motion detection is the false alarm rate, which must be kept reasonably low to be useful.

Congestion detection is credited with acceptable success, as well as counter flow detection. Virtual tripwire (a line drawn on the image) is a useful refinement of motion detection, capable of detecting trespassing in the image.

The above article warns that add-on software solutions offered as stand alone solutions have intrinsic limitations and therefore cannot deliver the most needed benefits.

In the author's view only integrated Video-analytics is likely to perform as required both live, in real time, and for post processing.

The camera should be provided with Video-analytics capability to transmit only specific events, avoiding unnecessary video traffic on the network.

Post processing analysis should then be performed in the integrated central server. Traditional analog systems cannot deliver these functions, unless provided with analog to digital data conversion.

The concluding remarks of the quoted article stress that setting realistic expectations is most important. It’s recommended not to believe without further inquiry all the ridiculous hype and nonsense about what Video analytics can deliver.

Before purchasing any advertised Video-analytics solution one should obtain practical demonstration of the real performance in an application reflecting the needs of the inquirer.

The practical realizations of Video-analytics potential will improve in time and will decrease in cost, but till then prospective customers should be cautious and test thoroughly products and methods before purchasing, to avoid costly disappointment.

It is now appearing that under the name of Video-analytics comes also software whose purpose is to rate videos (commercial or other)(measuring online video success) as to their acceptance and views by their audience, also called Metrics for Web Video Measurement. Obviously this has nothing to do with the security services addressed above.
