Tasers

to Stop short an Attacker in his Tracks

Home > Personal Security > Tasers

Tasers are self defense electronic devices designed to inflict an electroshock on an aggressor, when a person fearing of becoming victim of attack, fires it on the opponent in order to gain time for escape to safety.

The outcome of the application of these and similar weapons, designed to cause temporary incapacitation through involuntary muscular disruption, is to remove the threat without resorting to deadly means of resistance.

They were developed as non lethal weapons to be used by common citizens for self defense, but more specifically by military and law enforcement agencies for subduing aggressive or potentially dangerous suspects.

Although the civilian version is of reduced performance relative to that of police forces, it is nonetheless described as a temporarily debilitating device that causes Neuromuscular Incapacitation.

Unfortunately, notwithstanding the soothing statements of developers and suppliers, there is a history of deadly outcomes of Tasers used by security forces, although the causal connection may not yet be clearly demonstrated at least for part of the reported occurrences.

These are described as "personal safety electronic control devices" that can throw two probes up to about 4.5 meters (15 feet) and discharge an electric shock onto the target, thereby effectively incapacitating a potential aggressor for about 30 seconds.

The device is contained in a disposable cartridge good for one time use. The propulsion is provided by compressed nitrogen gas, making it a weapon not included in the category of firearms in the US.

For the supply of such defense weapons, one manufacturer devised a complete protocol including activation procedures, designed to provide full control of the candidates who apply for obtaining the device, and a system permitting to police forces to determine who used it in a scene of conflict.

These measures should prevent abuse of Tasers for criminal purposes. The legality of owning and using Tasers is location dependent. There are town, states and countries where carrying the device is forbidden.

Therefore whoever considers procuring such a defense weapon has full responsibility to ascertain whether it is legal to own and use it in the specific geographical location.

While the effectiveness of the use of Tasers for personal security is proven, severe doubts still remain about its complete harmlessness.

In the words of an observer, "Weapons not designed as lethal instruments can, nevertheless, prove fatal." Another said: "There is no such thing as a lethal or non-lethal weapon; the determinant is the application."

Questions about safety are raised mainly concerning police forces' use of Tasers, much less for civilian use. However everybody should be alert to the possibility of inflicting an irreparable, non intended damage to the target.

It is somewhat open to question, moreover, if a regular citizen who is not trained nor used to confront frightful situations, will be always ready to react to a threat at short notice by using correctly this powerful device.

Although it is tempting to consider Tasers as the definitive answer to fear from aggression, it seems nevertheless that one should first examine one's own personality and behavior, besides the legality check of the issue at the place concerned, before deciding to put one's confidence in such a solution.

It is better to stay clear of conflicts as much as possible, but it may be wise to prepare for any contingence.

To explore several different offers of these devices you may wish to look at Tasers.
