Tackling-vandalism

by becoming involved in prevention and education

Home > Community Safety > Tackling Vandalism

Tackling-vandalism is unfortunately a necessity in many communities where the natural conditions are favorable to the appearance and development of intentional damage being inflicted by annoyed or angry youth against public or private property.

To be effective any strategic initiative directed at limiting the proportions of these criminal activities should be based upon precise observation of the number and character of such occurrences, on individuating the segment of the population indulging in the adverse behavior, and in studying with the authorities the origins and nature of such a conduct in order to reduce the damage to the minimum.

Vandalism and criminal damage are terms used to describe anti social behavior consisting in violent actions aimed at damaging property belonging to the public or to some other person.

The apparent reasons invoked are those of satisfying a personal malaise feeling due to unchecked anger or envy, so directed because of revenge or annoyance with the victim or society.

Other excuses involve the effects of alcohol consumption or bravado behavior due to gang pressure for peer acceptance.

Although Vandalism is often considered one of the least serious common crimes, it should be contrasted and curbed by concerted efforts of all involved, included pacific citizens, lest it develops into more violent and unacceptable forms.

In particular it has been noticed that abandoned buildings or void properties may attract further crime. It is therefore important for Tackling-vandalism that concerned citizens draw the attention of local authorities to fence and close off those dangerous structures.

In principle the appointed authorities should care that public spaces allow maximum visibility and promote utilization by good citizens. In practice certain initiatives intended for Tackling-vandalism like cooperative clean up of a public area or gating of certain passage-ways could better come from local residents partaking responsibility with authorities to improve the quality of their own life.

While it is improbable that any one private citizen might initiate alone a significant action of Tackling-vandalism, it is certain that a small group of involved citizens can act together to motivate their neighbors to work with the authorities toward implementing successful operations.

Of the various strategies for Tackling-vandalism one should mention:

  • Those directed at improving the environment
  • Those aimed to find and promote alternative constructive activities for disgruntled youth, providing them with a sense of ownership of the area, and responsibility for its upkeep
  • Those devoted at increasing policing of the areas at risk, like those promoted by Neighborhood Watch
  • Those intended to inflict punishment or fines to the offenders by police and Justice authorities

It is affirmed that "the existence of a Neighborhood Watch scheme can deter certain criminal behaviors. If a crime is committed [in front of you], it is often best to observe calmly and discreetly, to provide the best chance of registering and reporting what is seen quickly and accurately."

Although the conditions vary from place to place and the commitment of police or other Social support structures may be different, since the problems are much the same almost everywhere, it is probable that similar solutions might be possible and effective in quite far away locations.

Therefore, if Tackling-vandalism is perceived as an urgent priority in your area, it is recommended that you, together with a few close friends, start discussing the problem and look for help from the local Authorities.

It is quite certain that they will welcome your constructive initiative for Tackling-vandalism and will help you as much as they can in view of improving life quality in your area.
