System-maintenance,

the only assurance for operational availability.

Home > Video Surveillance > System Maintenance

System-maintenance is an essential part of any Home Surveillance project. It may seem an obvious statement because it is evident that the malfunction of anyone of the various components might compromise the outcome of the whole surveillance purpose.

Therefore it is a pressing duty to establish a rigid System-maintenance routine according to a well thought of checklist to be strictly observed if one wishes to reap the fruits of the investment and to be reasonably confident on the usefulness of having implemented a working Home Surveillance and Security system.

An automatic System-maintenance self-diagnosing device is probably not available for a simple, home designed and assembled surveillance project. The lack of this useful implement should not prevent establishing sufficiently detailed instructions of individual tests and checks, even for oneself, to make sure that nothing is forgotten.

In particular one should refrain from looking for and accepting shortcuts or compromises in the periodic System-maintenance checkouts, otherwise one will never be sure if the system is in operating condition whenever it is needed most.

To plan for a useful preventive System-maintenance one should start from a correct and complete description of all components, including all manufacturer supplied documentation and User's Manual.

All these documents, including equipment guarantees and additional information should be kept in a well organized System Folder. It is not difficult to set up, it only requires some common sense and a rational index file to find quickly what may be needed from time to time.

A System-maintenance check should begin with the visual inspection of all components, to reveal if they appear in their normal condition or if there is evidence of any occasional trouble due to bad weather or of intentional damage by strangers.

In particular the camera is vulnerable, if visible, the cables and their connections, and the power supply outlets. Directional antennas of wireless transmitters and receiver may be inadvertently moved out of their preferred mutually facing orientation. While performing System-maintenance the presence of interference from additional unrelated equipment should be assessed and corrected if present.

Then all components should be tested individually, if any problem is detected while testing the whole system, to find out where the problem is located. Notes should be kept on any malfunctioning, detailing also the means used to correct the faulty condition. These notes will be invaluable in future System-maintenance troubleshooting for the same or for new troubles.

Definite times for checking and replacing consumables like batteries should be set up. A schedule for periodic clean up of the recording tapes and of recorder heads has to be established and followed.

While performing regular System-maintenance, the need for back up or replacement of equipment may suggest itself. Elements might be upgraded for better performance, as the field of consumer electronic technology introduces frequent innovations that should be monitored from time to time.

In conclusion, due to inevitable occasional failures even of simple systems or components, it is a must to check frequently by planned System-maintenance the proper functioning of any Home Surveillance video recording systems, to make sure that the regular operation and usefulness is not compromised by avoidable faults.
