Smoke-detectors just sit somewhere in the room space and monitor continuously the surrounding air. They are built to ring an alarm should a smoky condition trigger their operation. While the specific technology, either photoelectric or ionizing radiation, employed by specific Smoke-detectors need not be fully understood, it is quite important to know which hazards this kind of gadgets are built to protect from. Smoke-detectors are claimed to save lives when they alert sleeping people of imminent danger of suffocation, gas poisoning or fire. Recently most of these devices are battery operated, self contained and easy to install with a screwdriver. Some may have an adhesive surface for mounting under the ceiling or high on the wall. Of the gases dangerous to the health of dwellers, humans and pets alike, Carbon Monoxide (CO), resulting from partial combustion or smoldering, is the most dangerous because it has no odor, and it is poisonous if inhaled. Other gases are dangerous if combustible, because they may form explosive mixtures with air, likely to go off in presence of a flame or a spark. Inert gases may be suffocating, even if they only displace the oxygen needed for respiration. Normally, in a usual home, there is no need for complex gas analyzers and alarms. To provide acceptable safety, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are sufficient. An early warning signal is what is expected in case of danger. Smoke-detectors are said to be reliable and safe if well maintained and with batteries replaced at least once a year at some fixed date. It is also suggested to clean them regularly, at least twice a year, to remove dust, and to test them once a month by pushing the test button. It is recommended that the specific Smoke-detectors selected be approved by an independent authority like Underwriters Laboratories (UL) (http://www.ul.com/) or equivalent. The installation of reliable units is recommended by firefighters, who may sponsor specific brands. Standalone Wireless Smoke/Heat Detector Also Triggers Wireless Alarm Systems
