Siren-alarm:
protection from noise making
Home > Security Systems > Siren Alarm
Siren-alarm is generally an essential part of any Home Surveillance and Security System. It is the device that reacts immediately to an alarm signal set off by any of the sensors in case an attempt of intrusion is detected.
Although there are models suitable for indoors mounting to alert the homeowner, the most useful application seems to be for outside installation, except if municipal restrictions are in effect for protection of neighborhood quietness.
To alert of the impending danger set by fire or flood, a clearly distinguishable different acoustic signal is set off, to help in determining the cause of the alarm and what must be done next in a hurry (flee).
Installing Siren-alarm as an essential part of a Home Security System may serve three purposes.
The first and most important is deterrence: it is estimated that most burglars, save exceptional cases, would eschew a protected residence as the place of their operation, favoring a non protected dwelling instead.
The deafening noise coming from a screaming Siren-alarm is the second purpose: it is believed that most of times burglars, surprised by the uproar at their break-in attempt, will give up and leave in a hurry lest they are caught by witnesses.
The third and weakest purpose is that of alerting the neighbors, who hopefully should come and assemble outside the house as a menacing crowd even if they need do nothing but establish their presence and possibly call the police.
On the usefulness of organizing the community in a Neighborhood watch for increased protection we wrote in our page on Security Systems.
It must be acknowledged that unmotivated citizens may usually be indifferent to too frequent alarms, unless some educational action is taken to shake them from their apathy.
See Community Safety and also Neighborhood Watch.
To be effective, any Siren-alarm should be operational, not easily tampered with, and any electric wire should be hidden from view. Therefore, if permitted outside, it should be placed high, not reachable without a ladder and protected from rain.
You will find booklets or articles, boasting that they can teach anybody to shut off the operation of any siren alarm. That should only spur you to install it out of reach and without visible cables.
It is recommended that also blinking lights will start flashing to call the attention of bystanders to the focus of alarm activity, as the sound alone may be confusing and insufficient to find quickly the place.
With some systems a high current relay may be needed, capable of being triggered by the central panel's 12VDC output. For powering the sirens in the event of a natural or hostile power outage, a separate backup battery and charger is necessary.
The Siren-alarms offered in the market may differ in power and volume of sound, in ease of mounting, in the kind of weather protection and in technical design. It is recommended to look for UL (Underwriters Laboratories Inc.) certification or equivalent.
