Self-defense could fling you into jail. Do we really mean it? Oh yes, if it is ill conceived! The most successful tactic for implementing Self Defense, believe it or not, is to avoid confrontation, if you can. You should be prepared to do just that. Self-defense is an art that has to be learned and practiced. It is a matter that requires application, serious understanding, some knowledge, attention to details and awareness of the environment. It means sensing when a situation risks of getting out of control. Self-defense may cost some effort, especially for one whose pride would not let him/her withdraw without a fight, and if one is caught by fear or by anger. Or if someone with some practice of Martial Arts, as taught by some unscrupulous trainers, is induced to think that violence should be opposed by violence. It is a subject to consider in the context of Home Security, as Home should be preserved as the most secure place. However personal safety is most likely to become undermined outside home, in places of gathering or of careless behavior. Self-defense is not about collecting weapons and training to use them or preparing to fight. No reliance should be put in carrying arms. It might be much more dangerous. Defensive weapons may be seized by a swift aggressor and turned against the victim with deadly outcome. Even a toy gun, meant to scare the assailant away from the victim, can cause a real shot being fired with dreadful consequences. Self-defense is surviving or better, avoiding an aggression without being hurt. The best way to come out safely without violence is to recognize in time dangerous situations, before they rush down, in order to avoid being trapped there. In fact it is much better to stay away from danger before, than to try to escape once one is already caught in a violent confrontation. You may benefit from being exposed to a few things that will improve your personal safety by alerting you to pay attention to slight signs of danger. We have to admit it. We live in a dangerous world where violence and threatening behavior is reported daily in newspapers. Self-defense is about understanding dangerous situations in order to avoid them. One should know that aggressors look first for suitable victims, and then for the occasion to perpetrate their deeds far enough from other people who might come to rescue or at least testify. One should appreciate that aggressive behavior can appear also in more or less normal people. It may be triggered by a trifle if interpreted as an unforgivable offence by a somewhat disturbed personality. It may be difficult to recognize the telltale traits of criminal behavior, which include thorough disrespect for the law or of the rights of others, and the urgency to satisfy immediately one's whims with no hindrances. Therefore it is extremely important to be suspicious of any stranger and to judge with caution gestures, looks, voice changes, because aggression can explode instantly with the utmost violence. That is why one should never take the risk of being alone near a stranger in a desert place. The more so if there are two or more suspects strolling aimlessly or lingering around. Legal items should be investigated in depth especially by those that, having followed a course or two on Martial Arts, are determined to stand up and fight, to defend their pride at any cost. Even at the cost of being convicted of assault? Self-defense cannot be presumed to be a shield or a pretext permitting any and whatever aggressive action in its name. In case the attacked person is reacting successfully and the attacker is neutralized or hurt, it will be up to the court to decide if the act was justified Self-defense. Self-defense is considered by law differently and in its strictest sense, far from what anyone may think it is. Any gratuitous violence committed once the immediate danger is over, no more clear and evident, will be judged in court for what it is, namely an aggression. Serious consequences may occur to the person who does not know the legal implications of irresponsible reaction to an assault, if he/she fails to know in depth laws and legal practice as applied in court in real cases. In conclusion the conscious person intending to practice Self-defense should be aware of the dangers looming even in innocent looking situations and be ready to keep clear of useless confrontations.
