Secure-communication

and how to assure it

Home > Business Security Plan > Secure Communication

Secure-communication is a very important business related subject. It can include voice or data communication through phone, fax and the Internet, transactions involving orders and money transfer, or delicate exchanges on strategic moves or agreements, that should be protected from being heard and understood by hostile, interested third parties.

Secure communication means sharing of information between two parties while making reasonably sure that their exchange will not be overheard by others. Varying degrees of confidence that the secrecy is not breached will depend on the level of sophistication invested in the means and programs adopted to satisfy the requirement. Absolute security is possibly beyond reach in normal commercial applications.

Technology for Secure-communication plays an important part in the capability of one party to increase security, and in the success of their unauthorized rivals to tear down surreptitiously the defenses and reach the matter of exchange.

One of the most important techniques for protecting the content of a message from prying eyes or ears is to use encryption. That means transforming the plain text into an illegible, garbled message (encrypted) through a mathematical formula (an algorithm). The reverse process permits to the authorized recipient only to restore the secret message using a special key, or unique knowledge, that is kept confidential.

This and similar techniques of Secure-communication aim to hide the information. Other methods use anonymity, by hiding the communicating parties into a crowd, so that it is impossible to single them out. Or hide the fact that specific information exchanges are taking place, by masking it into purposeful noise.

The methods can be employed to transform and secure signals broadcast by radio or to those conveyed by wire as by phone, fax or Internet.

The person in charge of decision taking regarding Secure-communication for the business, should learn the basics in order to identify the critical aspects relevant to the company and to be able to interact with consultants and service providers.

Any business should examine the specific requirements and risks faced when sensitive information is exchanged with associates or customers, and devise, with the help of specialized companies, the most cost effective, suitable Secure-communication solution meeting their needs.

Part of the project consists in finding adequate preventive actions to hinder anybody outside the business to gain access to the firm computers and to implant dangerous software capable of embezzling information or to disrupt safe work performance.
