RFID-tags or Radio-frequency Identification Tags are becoming commonplace means used for tagging single stock items individually. If your business requires updated tracking of multiple items or components, automatic orders refilling and even controlling of shrinkage, the cursed elusive loss that afflicts so many, then you might be ripe for checking if this technology is for you, either now or in the near future. They are now small, cheap, effective at a short distance, don't need line-of-sight scanning like barcodes, and enable real-time secure communication. Experts forecast strong incremental growth in the retail commerce, especially in apparel and footware goods where the multiplication of models and sizes makes tracking at the item-level a hard job. The technology is mature as it was already a few years back except that cost and availability changed remarkably. Cost went down radically (to 10-12 cents each) for passive RFID tags, those without a battery which seem to be preferred for commercial applications. It is true that privacy issues are still debated because personal information should never be open to whoever wants to eavesdrop. But progress is being made in the amount of memory available on the tags that will in time assure secure encryption of sensitive data. Tracking of livestock is a classic example of successful application of RFID-tags technology, permitting instant monitoring and managing of entire herds. Access control is another, being used for hotels instead of magnetic cards, and also for parking lots and toll tagging. Determining at each instant the exact location of a person in a large structure like a hospital is possible with RFID-tags. However this use may be considered a breach of privacy, unless additional protection safeguards are implemented. If all valuable items are identified with RFID-tags, unauthorized removal can be monitored at critical gates, thus improving the outcome of battling against theft. Additional applications are studied for keeping track of newborns at hospitals, and for old or disabled people in nursing homes. The current trend is towards added security through encryption even for passive RFID-tags, while permitting reading at a distance of three to five meters from speeding cars. Given the huge interest of the industry and the large, increasing request for innovative applications, it is out of doubt that significant progress will be achieved in the coming years with an explosion of applications for RFID-tags. A number of useful resources on this subject were listed in issue 32 of Surveillance Guide News for May 2010. Click on SGN#032 for seeing it and searching the sources. For those who may profit from suitable applications to be served by RFID-tags it will be worth to stay in touch with progress and explore new systems as they become available. * * * For any questions write us by e-mail using the Contact Us Form.
