Commercial systems must be flexible enough to accommodate different usages. From background music as provided in shopping centers or amusement parks, to sales notifications at supermarkets, to various announcements in public places. It is a matter of debate if a single system can be optimized for all purposes.

Traditionally analog Public-address-systems were provided. Current trend is toward increased digital applications. In both cases amplifiers play a crucial role.

A controller is used in digital systems for continuous monitoring the status of all the equipment in the network, reporting changes in real time.

All the elements are probed and checked to assure availability at all times. Sufficient redundancy must be present with self diagnosis and self healing capability, and should possibly include alternative back-up power supply.

While in the past emergencies were announced by a siren, often causing panic and casualties in overcrowded places, modern Public-address-systems are designed to manage difficult situation by providing precise directions with clear and calming messages indicating the locations at risk, to allow controlled evacuation of affected areas.

This integrated functionality requires thoughtful layout design of Public-address-systems, perfect installation, constant monitoring, suitable training of appointed controllers, adequate supervision, prompt and responsible activation.

All the elements of a system, including microphones, amplifiers and loudspeakers, with special attention to their number and location, must be adapted to the application, the size and configuration of the place, if indoors or outdoors.

Precise measurements of loudspeakers sound pressure levels may need to be taken in many locations from different hardware, to determine acceptable solutions.

Speaker clarity is an important requirement, especially for outdoor applications.

No standard solution can be applied to all and every installation, on the contrary expert professionals with documented records of successful applications should be charged with designing a suitable Public-address-systems for any specific project involved.

Rules and Regulations are not completely defined at the time of this writing and may be different and changing in various countries. Providers must have sufficient knowledge of requirements as applicable in each case.

It is recognized that single Public-address-systems are presently ill adapted to perform various and contrasting functions like background music, commercial announcements and voice alarms. It is a challenge to integrate existing solutions in a single working system.

The future outlook of Public-address-systems is for partial integration of different brands equipment into standard networks so that audio systems, video surveillance, access control and building management will come under central control. Anyhow future systems will have to be more secure because attacks from hackers or terrorists are perceived as an increasing risk to be protected from.
