Personal-security:

how to plan the best strategy

Home > Personal Security

Personal-security is about whatever you should know and do to be safe from criminal attack, robbery or offense.

There is a common, risky attitude that should be resisted. Some may think that nothing dangerous will occur to them (so that there is no need for precautions). Others may be convinced that if any crime is bound to happen to them it will (no matter which prevention is implemented).

Contrary to these faulty statements all should take responsibility for their own well being and for their loved ones' even if full success cannot be always guaranteed. By behaving rationally one can influence what happens and at least mitigate the consequences of any unpleasant or dangerous occurrence.

Personal-security is achieved if one implements as far as possible the complex of recommended precautions when strolling or traveling and when in any public place. Moreover one should educate to this discipline all family members, dependent children and seniors alike.

It is assumed here that you enjoy Personal-security at home (see Home Security), in your workplace and in general in frequented and busy public spaces where you may spend considerable time. It is especially in the transit between two secure locations that you may be temporarily exposed to higher risks.

The first and most important precaution for Personal-security is being always alert of what is happening in the immediate surroundings. One need not become paranoiac and worried all time, but rather get into the habit of observing and of thinking ahead also of unpleasant situations which may develop nearby.

In particular one should try to avoid locations, likely to appeal to people capable of committing crime, such as less popular lanes, isolated parks and buildings, back streets and dark parking lots.

Although different means of Personal-security are offered on the market, one should consider that those may even increase the danger. In fact the threat of their use may often precipitate a situation, causing unwanted excessive damage from both the criminal and the victim, damage for which one will be accounted for.

Secondly, if not used with skill and prowess, those same means can be snatched from the hands of the self defending person and retorted against him/her.

Except in exceptional situations the use of firearms should be banned, although special regulations may be in effect to govern their legal application. Also knives can become lethal arms and there is no proof of their defensive use.

One learns from newspapers of wrangles where one was stabbed to death: it is in doubt if another knife, intended for defense, would have prevented the outcome. The above is said for lethal weapons.

But a similar argument is valid also for non-lethal, defense means like pepper spray guns (spraying a substance called OC = Oleoresin Capsicum), air tasers and stunning devices.

It is not enough to purchase such equipment, as too often happens. If using such devices is really intended, a serious and long training should be undertaken to learn how to apply them effectively.

In any case their usefulness for Personal-security is at least questionable because they must be available when needed (not in the car trunk!) even if the danger exploded suddenly, and be used immediately with precision to achieve their effect, avoiding the risk of their falling in the assailant's hands.

Similar reasoning should be the object of study for anyone believing that Personal-security is best assured by becoming an expert in Self Defense or in Martial Arts.
