Perimeter-control,
before the last ditch...

Perimeter-control is a useful Home Surveillance technology to be applied whenever there is a need to avoid that unauthorized people trespass some selected line. The system is designed to deliver an alarm upon detection of such a menacing event.

You may remember old low technology Perimeter-control solutions that employed watch dogs chained to a long steel wire line, to patrol up and down along given perimeter stretches. The dogs were meant to alert with their barking the guards on duty nearby. This system works fine, except that it is labor intensive, an expensive proposition these days. We review hereafter the Perimeter-control subject more for completeness than for suggesting that such a system should be always employed in any Home Surveillance installation. And even then it may be quite a demanding task for a do-it yourself project. But many firms specializing in security for business and organizations may offer simplified solutions suitable also to private homes. Perimeter-control using electronic technology can come over and above more classic obstacles to intrusion like security barriers, walls, fences, or warnings notices on forbidden access etc. As usual with other types of alarms, the important decision is how to exploit the signal that goes off. The Perimeter-control triggered alarm can start the operation of surveillance cameras, or it can sound a siren to alert guards and scare burglars. At night it can flood the scene with powerful lights, blinding the intruders and convincing them to withdraw. The alarm can be set to send a written or spoken message to a distant recipient, to initiate some defensive action, or to alert the police. It is up to the home owner to determine which action is most appropriate to the circumstances. Perimeter-control is easier if it is possible to delimit the periphery by a few straight lines. Usually the system consists in pairs of emitters and receivers of collimated infrared beams. The system is operating in stand by mode when each receiver is illuminated by its own infrared light beam and the alarm is off.Any passing person or object disrupts the beam continuous reception, and this signal failure triggers the alarm in a central control panel. One of the problems is to avoid or limit false alarms. In this case it means avoiding that a passing animal, i.e. an innocent dog, be interpreted as a menacing intruder that triggers the event alarm. By establishing a number of sensors separated by a suitable distance along a vertical line, one can evaluate the physical dimension of the intruder and eliminate false alarms generated by wandering pets. Video systems endowed with motion detection and analysis facilities may also be used for Perimeter-control. See Video Alarms.
A fence can be made with complex electronic alarm systems, capable of detecting attempts to climb over it or to rip through it a passage, although this type of defense is not usually employed for Home Surveillance and protection. The basic idea of Perimeter-control is to try to stop the intruder as early as possible in the transition from public way to private home, and to convince the unwelcome guest to leave before damage is done, by making evident that the intrusion is being detected and recorded. * * *
