Neighborhood-watch
for safer and more caring communities

Neighborhood-watch is possibly your best bet if you want to improve security and safety in your area. Do you think that the current state of crime prevention in the neighborhood is acceptable? If not, to whom should you complain?
If you fear that the Authorities, overwhelmed with their daily pursuit after yesterday's criminals, cannot prevent the crimes of today and tomorrow, you may reach the inescapable conclusion that you might as well do something about that.
You need not act alone, though, but you can motivate a few of your friends and neighbors and together find the Neighborhood-watch informal way to improve security and quality of life in your place. Is that not a worthy resolution?
It appears that almost everywhere there is already a running campaign to help citizens start with a program built to address the main problems of their area.
Although such voluntary Neighborhood-watch initiatives cannot replace more traditional security systems that should be installed and working in every home, they provide crime prevention by removing the criminals' self confidence and sending them looking for their chance in a less guarded environment.
Unfortunately you cannot hope to extirpate evil from society. That is not the point. But your action will certainly contribute to make your area more tightly knit, more friendly, and such that it is safer and nicer to live in.
Besides other things, the best programs look actively for youth, expelled by regular classrooms, that being idle and bored are easy prey to criminals that may lure them into engaging in antisocial activities. By creating for them constructive enterprises and keeping them occupied with learning new skills they will be recovered to society to everyone's advantage.
Either if the entity promoting and coordinating these Neighborhood-watch activities originates from official Authorities or from non profit Associations, their welcome operations are the issue of having studied the problems in depth and having documented the patterns of crimes and their prevention.
They know what works, and which are the tools for obtaining the best results. They are generally ready to distribute leaflets of information, to lecture on the subjects of their activity, to point to the urgent problems to be tackled and to help new recruits to engage in productive and coordinated action.
It is never a question of looking for confrontation or fight. On the contrary: Neighborhood-watch people are taught to be alert to unusual activity, and are encouraged to report any suspect movement. Having established quick phone lines to authorities and ready reporting channels, communication is much advantaged and calls for rescue have improved chances of being answered in a hurry.
One of these Neighborhood-watch organizations states that their "primary mission is to enable people to create safer and more caring communities by addressing the causes of crime and violence and reducing the opportunities for crime to occur."
Where will you learn and train for your new task? Very near to you.
Just type "Neighborhood-watch" in the box of your search engine in your computer and you will find scores of those associations that take part in organizing and helping people help themselves. From the central pages you will be addressed to local agencies operating in your area.
From all we know we believe that participating in Neighborhood-watch is an important contribution to be recommended to those who care for the safety of their home and of their entire community.
