Employers must make sure they are fully informed of all applicable laws and regulations (Health and Safety obligations) concerning anyone described as a Lone-worker. Occupational Hazards are the subjects that must be investigated relative to each task and job.

An important part of the preparatory work consists in Risk Assessment, a statement of the risks present in the given working set up and of the measures to be taken to minimize loss or injury in the work place.

Two different problems may arise and the employer should have implemented adequate precautions for confronting both cases.

The first involves the unplanned encounter with a criminal, intending to exploit the presence of the Lone-worker for perpetrating undisturbed his/her robbery plan with the minimum resistance and the highest probability of success.

This happens at isolated gas stations and other small business during the night when other customers are not around. To minimize the dangers and make the place much less attractive to the criminal, at least two precautions should be taken.

The Lone-worker is not supposed to have any money, as all cash should be thrown immediately through a slot in a safe to be opened only by management. This policy should be visibly advertised for all to see.

Furthermore the area should be under constant surveillance of one or more cameras so that any recorded event can be investigated later by police. Besides having the cameras out of reach as a precaution against ill-intentioned saboteurs, no effort should be done to conceal them. On the contrary if in full view they may be a deterrent to criminal actions.

But accidents may happen also without criminals. A Lone-worker who slipped on the floor or tripped on some obstruction, or fell down the stairs and was seized by sudden loss of consciousness could be rescued in the shortest time if a central emergency unit is alerted immediately. To make this possible monitored surveillance cameras are invaluable.

Furthermore suitable means to call for help should be available at many locations and operating at all times. A recent type of alarm (called "man down alarm") worn by the Lone-worker is designed to transmit a call for help in case its mechanism does not feel any movement for a certain time.

The efficiency of these devices depends on the devotion and motivation of the personnel assigned to the assistance team as well as on the communication means installed by management. These precautions can be augmented by the periodic visits of the patrolling guards.
