Juvenile-crime

should be prevented by concerted efforts

Home > Community Safety > Juvenile Crime

Juvenile-crime refers to criminal aggressions committed by young people. The presence and the activity of criminal gangs of youngsters in a community are destabilizing for the conduct of peaceful leaving together.

Therefore much thought and means are invested in the effort of studying the causes of unacceptable Juvenile-crime behavior and on prevention of their wrong doings or on correction of those youngsters who go astray. Public authorities are recognizing the importance of allocating resources for the prevention of delinquency.

It is doubtful if this important aspect of community well-being can be left only in the hands of police and of prosecution. A closely knit society would do well to engage in preventive initiatives, to check dangerous situations and defuse them before they explode.

Many different theories were developed, but little agreement is found among researchers on how best describe the reasons for development of aggressive personality and Juvenile-crime from young age.

The reasons that experts attribute to the fact that certain young people engage in criminal behavior is probably connected to risk factors active when they were younger but researchers still do not agree on the main reasons why juveniles commit crimes.

Some of the risk factors associated with juvenile crime are poverty, single parent or unstable family life, exposure to violence, drugs, easy access to firearms, delinquent peer groups, and media violence.

Prevention services therefore, as far as they are supported by adequate budgets, tend to include various activities such as substance abuse monitoring, treatment, family counseling, youth mentoring, parenting education, educational support, and youth sheltering to prevent Juvenile-crime.

Unlike the adult criminal justice system, the stated purpose of the juvenile justice system is, as far as possible, to focus primarily on rehabilitation rather than punishment for Juvenile-crime.

To this end, local juvenile facilities try to invest significantly more in education, treatment, and counseling programs to juvenile offenders as compared to adult criminals. Therefore correctional programs for young people tend to be more expensive than those for adults.

The published statistics of Juvenile-crimes report only a fraction of those committed for a number of reasons, involving the way crimes are reported, if at all.

One should account for bias in the wider society, which possibly distributes opportunities and resources unfairly to youth as they grow up, contributing to increase the risks of minority youth involvement in the justice system.

Communities conscious of the importance of social assistance to weak segments of the population should do well to act in harmony with appointed authorities to help and defuse the threat of Juvenile-crime from going on unchecked.
