Infrared-illuminators,

invisible light sources for Surveillance

Infrared-illuminators are sources of light invisible (to the eye) useful for lighting up dark spaces with the purpose of obtaining good quality images with Black and White Surveillance Cameras even in case of low daylight or in complete darkness, without resorting to flood lighting.

Although different types are available, the most common for Home Surveillance are LED (Light Emitting Diode) Infrared-illuminators. They consist in a number of small bulbs assembled in a geometric pattern within a separate casing or mounted around a camera lens in a special combined casing.

Sturdy cases are offered for surviving harsh conditions in bad weather, simpler cases are suitable for indoor applications.

Separate Infrared-illuminators can be mounted near a camcorder to study behavior of night animals without disturbing their nocturnal habits with visible light.

The location pattern of the single elements may be selected to produce a spot of collimated light or diffused light, one suitable for backlight to increase contrast, or another one used to obtain special effects depending on the point of view.

Infrared-illuminators are described by type, (LED as above but also laser or lamp), by the (invisible) monochromatic light single wavelength (generally 850 or 940 nanometer [1 nm = 1*10-9 meter]), by the number of emitters, by the power consumed, by area and distance range covered, and by lifetime given in hours.

Selection is best based on purpose and requirements. If exact identification of intruders is not essential to the purpose of Surveillance, then economic illuminators may be adequate.

Color Surveillance Cameras will not produce color pictures when the scene is lit up only by infrared illumination, because of the single color (monochromatic) nature of the invisible light provided. This consideration gives one more variable to take into account when selecting the proper Surveillance Cameras for a given project.

In the pages on Surveillance Cameras, a few are proposed with integral Infrared-illuminators. See Outdoor Surveillance Cameras and Indoor Surveillance Cameras.
