Hybrid-video:

Are Analog Cameras still Any Good?

Home > Video Surveillance > Hybrid Video DVRs

Hybrid-video is now a catch phrase to describe mixed systems that integrate different types of technology in a working system.

While the trend of brand new Surveillance Video applications is for digital cameras of Megapixel capability, it is a known fact that older systems exist which have substantial investments in older technology, typically in analog cameras.

In fact, according to market analysts, about 80 percent of the video surveillance market still uses analog cameras connected to standard digital video recorders (DVRs).

Therefore, before deciding on a massive investment in new technology, it pays to analyze in detail the situation for studying if a smarter solution could be achieved with Hybrid-video DVRs, assuring a new lease of life to expensive and still perfectly working equipment.

Check the following offer which seems one of the best and least costly for an integrated Surveillance System:

Night Owl 4-channel H.264 DVR with 4 Night Vision Cameras.

Typically analog cameras were connected to Video Cassette Recorders (VCR) that stored the analog video signal in a suitable pattern of synchronized lines to be displayed on a regular analog monitor as was used for television.

In time, with technological progress to digital picture capture and display, the same cameras were connected, through Analog to Digital Converters, to digital video recorder (DVR) where video in digital format is stored, generally after compression, to a disk drive.

There are in the market of IP (Internet Protocol) Video, wild predictions of very strong growth for the coming years, in part due to the reduced cost and complexity of IP cameras, and additional features such as panoramic recording that cut down on the number of cameras needed.

However it is possibly the present availability of Hybrid-video DVRs that enable incremental progress to IP from a traditional analog system, the major single factor responsible for such an encouraging prophecy.

This last cause is very important for companies that want to add IP cameras to their existing analog equipment. In the past, IP cameras required Video Management Software (VMS) or Network Video Recorder (NVR). To view and manage all the screen views on the same system, surveillance officials also needed encoders or Analog to Digital Converters to digitize analog cameras' signals.

Now however, a new Hybrid-video DVR combines in a single device disparate camera connection technologies accepting inputs from different cameras, allowing to directly connect both analog and IP cameras. It also permits to store, view and manage video from different sources.

These systems enable viewing from a distance, have user friendly interfaces and analytics, and can be integrated with remote storage, systems for access control and other third-party setups. The acceptance of Hybrid-video DVRs in the past two years is increased remarkably, according to market analysts.

The availability of this new solution offers the option to add to an existing analog system a few high resolution (megapixel) cameras, without needing to implement a Local Area Network (LAN).

Taking into account the remarkable cost involved in the added complexity of managing a LAN, more complicated to implement, maintain and troubleshoot than a traditional analog system, just for the additional high-resolution capability, it is evident that selecting Hybrid-video DVR is an inexpensive even if temporary solution that should be evaluated.

If the operator of a traditional analog surveillance video system wishes to upgrade some of the cameras but not all to high-resolution video to preserve much of the previous investment, the economic opportunity exists to implement hybrid HD (High Definition) CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) with analog DVR accepting a certain number of inputs for each class.
