Cold Weather Surveillance Camera
As any other electro-mechanical device, also Outdoor Cameras are built for operation within a given temperature range. Under low temperatures, water vapor may condense between the lenses of a composite objective blurring the images.
Special Outdoor Cameras are enclosed in a sturdy case and are heated by an electrical resistance element to ensure proper functioning even in cold weather.
See Outdoor Surveillance Cameras and look for those with integral heating.

Counter-surveillance
As a Home-surveillance-FAQ, this is a general term that includes any form of intentional interference with the purpose of Home Surveillance, designed to foil the measures taken to perform the required functions. Anyone installing a Home Surveillance system should be aware of what can void his/her efforts.
In a similar way anyone suspecting of being the object of improper surveillance should be alerted on how to check if any means are used covertly to monitor his/her activities.
This subject is treated in some detail in our page on Counter Surveillance.

Fixed vs. Motorized Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ) Camera
A fixed camera points always at a given field of view. If the camera and the location are selected properly, Home Surveillance can be performed quite satisfactorily.
In rare and special cases one may wish to monitor a scene in real time being able to view more detail. One can then use a PTZ camera that, under manipulation from the control room, can close in on the subject of interest.
Or one may program a preselected routine to be performed repeatedly or in response to a movement detection alarm.
More details to this Home-surveillance-FAQ are given in our page on Surveillance Cameras.

This Home-surveillance-FAQ deals with Home Internet Surveillance.
Remote access trough the Internet, permits to view from afar, with a properly connected Computer, either live or recorded Home Surveillance Video images.
This ability gives a new dimension to the kind of monitoring that can be performed.
On this subject see Internet Surveillance and IP Camera.

Home Protection against Thunderstorms
This Home-surveillance-FAQ may be a severe problem that should be dealt with by experts. But one should be prepared to consider it and to take proper measures.
See our page on Natural Damages.

Illegal Issues
In principle any legal Home-surveillance-FAQ should be discussed with lawyers and professionals in legal affairs. We wish just to warn on two aspects that came to our attention.
One is that the capacity of certain Home Surveillance cameras to pick up audio messages may be considered illegal. See our page on Camera Audio.
The other is that one must be sure that by performing Home Surveillance one does not breach somebody else privacy. Otherwise its use may be illegal. See our page on Hidden Camera under the heading Illegal use.

Interference in Wireless Camera Signals
Interference is a disturbance in the transmission of radio signals generated by a different source using the same or a near frequency.
When considering the advantages of a wireless camera one should be alert to the possibility that other appliances nearby using the same frequency may compromise the reception of useful images.
See Video Signal Transmission for Wireless Cameras.

Lux Rating
This term refers to the minimum intensity of light at which the camera will still produce an informative and useable image.
A thorough explanation of this subject is offered in our page on
Fundamental Concepts under the headings: Illumination, Lighting, Sensitivity and Lux Level Rating.

Sequential Switcher
When installing in a Home Surveillance system more than one camera, one has to decide how the images will be viewed using a single Monitor.
A sequential Switcher connects every camera to the Monitor every few seconds, according to a predetermined schedule. The schedule can be overridden by a manual command.
Read more on this item in our page on Camera Monitor under the heading Dedicated or Switchable.

Telephoto (closeup) or Wide Angle
These are attributes of the Camera Lens that may be built for different viewing.
Telephoto, or long focal length Surveillance-camera-lenses, have a smaller field of view than a normal lens, and show enlarged more distant objects in more detail. They produce the effect as one may see through a telescope.
Wide Angle lenses on the contrary display a larger field of view than a normal lens as if viewed from a more distant point. Small details may be lost.
A discussion of these and other types of lenses can be seen in our page on Camera Lenses.
