Flood-detectors are sensors to be placed at critical locations in low places in or around the house to alert if a sudden malfunction or natural disaster lets in water to invade the space.

Anyone would want to be informed immediately, to take action by stopping the unwanted inflow if possible, or to flee if necessary to save life. Many are the possible Flood-detectors available on the market. Stand alone sensors are connected to a horn that sounds a loud alarm when sensing flooding. Other devices are connected to a central control box or computer room environment monitoring unit that takes inputs from many different sensors and issues a predetermined signal upon the occurrence of triggering events. These can be programmed to transmit their alarm by Internet or by phone, if required, and if proper connections are set up. If different alarm sensors are programmed for installation, it is probably more effective to plan to have one central unit to take care of all inputs instead of mounting independent stand alone sensors for every alarm considered. If this decision is taken at planning time, it permits to schedule the progressive addition of more and more sensors, similar or different, as long as compatible with the central relay box, and until all the input lines are exhausted. Usually Flood-detectors are battery operated. Therefore, to assure constant monitoring, a rigid maintenance schedule must be observed to replace them before they run down. Some sensors are wireless, some are wired. There are probably advantages and limitations to both types so that a general recommendation valid in all cases cannot be expressed. It would be advisable to look for Flood-detectors approved by UL (Underwriters Laboratories) or equivalent authorities that put them to the test to validate their adequacy. Local Firefighters may also have experience with certain products they would recommend in preference to others. Normally Flood-detectors have to be reset and rearmed once the alarm was triggered, so that one should take into account this need if far away uninhabited houses are to be monitored this way. If the house or the facility has also a system of automatic sprinklers installed to prevent spreading of fire, the risk of flooding may be greater, if the temperature or smoke sensors are not planned to stop sprinkling water once the flames are extinguished. Periodic tests must be scheduled upon setup and at regular intervals thereafter to make sure that the systems are operational when needed.
