Fire-alarm

Save Life and Limit Loss

Home > Security Systems > Fire Alarms

Fire-alarm systems are organized control devices that detect fires in buildings, and then take actions and alert all involved, providing active protection from the dangers of unchecked fire starting and spreading.

It is a natural extension, recommended by FEMA
(see http://www.usfa.dhs.gov/downloads/pyfff/alarmsys.html),
of Home Security systems designed primarily to save people and property from other risks.

Why is such an extension a good idea? Because the principles are the same you already approached when you planned your main Home Security system, and the sensors you will install in critical locations, perform much the same functions of those you already selected, the output signals originating actions similar to those you decided upon.

You may have indeed decided to install one or more devices, following the recommendations of our page on Smoke and Gas Detectors.

Here you are invited to step back a little and think again if you should complement your system with additional Fire-alarm capabilities covering the chances of occurrence of risks not dealt with adequately for the time being.

This reminds me of a real case that happened some time ago when the teenager daughter of our friends, alone at home, put some oil in a pan and lit the gas under it. She then went out just for a moment to meet somebody on an urgent matter.

When she suddenly remembered and rushed back half an hour later, the kitchen had already gone in ashes and much of her house was still burning, as nobody was aware meanwhile that it had been bursting into flames.

Had a loud signal got off in time from a suitable Fire-alarm system, the loss and the anguish could have been contained to more limited proportions.

An active Fire-alarm protection system is built to detect fire by heat detectors and by smoke sensors, to operate sprinkler systems automatically, to sound an alarm alerting people to flee from the location of danger and to summon fire fighters if programmed to do so.

In fact the actions that can be started by the alarm signal should be selected in the planning stage. They are open ended so that any desirable outcome can be supported by suitable devices.

Fire-alarm systems can also be manually operated by anyone witnessing dangerous flames, by pushing a button or breaking a glass in special panels set up for this purpose.

One of the most important recommendations is to prepare an emergency escape route plan to be known to all, children included, and to practice its use every now and then.

While studying the house and the strategic emplacement of suitable devices one can become acquainted with risks connected to specific features of the building and one should examine the opportunity of providing fire extinguishers where needed.

A rigid routine should be established for checking and replacing batteries in all sensors. You don't want to leave the system disabled for such a silly overlook.

Once nurturing the idea that one should do something about Fire-alarm protection, it can be a good idea to seek pertinent advice from experts like fire fighters and insurance brokers specializing in fire risks.
