Emergency-button,

lifeline to rescue

Emergency-button:
can you afford to leave your loved ones without?

Emergency is a catch-all term that may mean many things in different situations. Official sites encourage citizens to prepare for all kind of emergencies, where in fact one may need quite other provisions than a simple button.

For general Emergency preparedness, that includes mitigation, response, and recovery related to any kind of disaster, whether natural, man-made, due to equipment malfunction or national security, see the following sites:

http://www.ready.gov

http://www.dhs.gov/index.shtm

Being prepared for all kinds of emergencies means being able to respond in time of crisis to save lives and property, and to help a community, or even a nation, return to normal life after a disaster occurs.

Individuals are asked to do just three things: get an emergency supply kit, make a family emergency plan, and be informed about the different types of emergencies that could occur and their appropriate responses.

That means preparing an emergency supply list, using as a reference the long list of suggested items, and then make a plan to provide in a definite time what is needed.

Officials encourage everyone to prepare a plan to react sensibly and adequately when faced with fires, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, explosions, warning signals, fallout protection, terrorism attacks, and other emergency situations, hoping that these do not happen all together.

This is probably more difficult but not less necessary. It is important to avoid total helplessness in case of need.

While some of the recommendations may seem far fetched and possibly important only in very rare cases, one cannot deny that natural disasters do happen, often at very short notice or none at all.

We are so accustomed to the many forms of message transmission available in normal times that we may have difficulty in figuring out how to stay in contact with family members in case something happens that cuts off temporarily all means of communication.

It may be a good idea to dedicate some time to study the official advice reported above, and to study how it applies to one's individual case and place. It is also an exercise in humility, that reminds to all how human life is frail and how civilization amenities, that we take for granted, are conditional.

While an Emergency-button cannot be expected to be the adequate response to all disasters, it may give, especially to aged people living alone, the calm feeling that they can call for help if something should happen to them like a fall or a sudden illness.

The Emergency-button is an extension of an old time application called emergency stop, usually a mushroom shaped button of red color, that is applied to all sorts of machinery having moving parts, to stop them in a hurry if a dangerous situation develops.

The most diffused Emergency-button is worn around the person's neck or arm. Upon being pressed it sends a radio signal to a central device that is programmed to dial a few phone numbers, and play a prerecorded message through a regular telephone.

The receivers of the message may be family members who should take charge and deal with the emergency, or Medical Services that provide assistance for a monthly fee according to their specific protocol. In this last case the Emergency-button device can be called "emergency call button" or "medical monitoring button" or "emergency medical alert system".

Usually the system provides means of checking if it is not a false alarm, occurring if the button was operated involuntarily.

Other instruments offer voice dialing that may be useful in certain cases.

A different kind of Emergency-button is that used by individuals working lonely at night: the Emergency-button, hidden under the counter or otherwise not in plain view, can be pressed in times of distress (like robbery or threats) or when immediate assistance is needed, triggering a silent alarm or a loud siren from a compressed air horn.

A service available not only for emergencies offers to track location and movements of vehicles or individuals for security purposes. It is based on GPS Service although a similar effect can be obtained by anybody who uses the proper systems and makes the needed contacts on his/her own.

You may wish to check the following page that shows a monitored medical system and a few standalone devices with automatic dial up when the emergency button is pressed.

You may check which of the following Emergency-button systems will give you the peace of mind you deserve.

Denying the existence of a potential problem is not good policy. Better to struggle to find and implement adequate precautions, even if a perfect and complete Emergency-button solution may be out of reach.
