Animal-camera-surveillance lets you see always what happens everywhere in your farm to each of your animals. Don't be put down by the fact that this is one more application of the technology that uses surveillance cameras. It can be a very powerful tool if implemented correctly for the right ends. Although the object of Animal-camera-surveillance is in this case quite specific, both equipment and implementation are in principle very similar to those used for other purposes. The means for Animal-camera-surveillance should be selected to provide the highest quality of information and installed with a certain redundancy (more than the strict minimum) to guarantee full coverage of the area and of every single animal. However the number of cameras, their features and capabilities and their connections should be specially studied and implemented for delivering the views most important to those in charge of caring for the animals necessities. Among the duties of the animal keepers are avoiding intrusion of extraneous people, either by error or if moved by hostile intentions, avoiding that the animals hurt themselves or attack each other, and that they get into dangers of any kind. Important to every breeder is the healthy condition of every animal, to detect and cure any illness condition as soon as observable and to avoid epidemic spread. The observation of peculiar animal behavior may help in early finding out. While not interfering physically with the freedom of movement and of activities of individual animals, a properly conducted surveillance operation, depending on the characters of the stock farm, has to be designed to detect as soon as possible signals of danger or of trouble from whatever causes. For the simplest case of pet surveillance, restricted in movement in a limited space, possibly one or two cameras will cover all needs. Farms that keep pets at full board to let their owners go on holiday, offer the service of a few fixed web cams, for enabling the masters watch occasionally their pets from any distance over the Internet. For large establishments with a great number of animals on a vast area, the needs are multiplied, if adequate surveillance has to be assured. For night surveillance, either adequate light or infrared illumination has to be assured everywhere, if not interfering with animal habits, or cameras equipped for night vision must be used. A large monitoring room has to be established, for controlling the views from several cameras. If operators are assigned to the constant monitoring of the living stock, swinging cameras with ptz (pan-tele-zoom) capability are needed to cover a larger area. The most important thing though is to have an adequate team ready for intervention as necessary when alerted by the monitored screens. The recording capability is probably of secondary importance, only as a backup to investigate later the dynamics of whatever happened. Whoever has responsibility for a stock-farm of any size would do well to consider Animal-camera-surveillance as an essential information tool for performing adequately the job with full knowledge of the situation at any time.
